While it is Xabi Alonso who is claiming all of the headlines this season, it is another former Real Madrid midfielder that could be in line for one of Europe’s big jobs this summer. Nuri Sahin could well be competing for the Bundesliga title with Sahin next season.

The 35-year-old is barely two years out of retirement, but looks to be on the fast-track into top level management. Currently in charge of Borussia Dortmund’s B team, if coach Edin Terzic does not renew his deal at the Westfalenstadion, then Sahin is primed to take over from him.

However should Terzic remain in his position, then Sahin could take over at Besiktas. Diario AS say that Sahin is keen on the Besiktas job, if the Dortmund one is not available, and has recently met with President Hasan Arat, who was recently in Germany to view the Champions League semi-final first legs.

Sahin signed for Los Blancos in 2011 for €10m, but an injury hit spell led to him spending just one season at the Santiago Bernabeu under Jose Mourinho. After two loans to Liverpool and then back to Dortmund, he rejoined the Schwarzgelben for €7m. Sahin earned 52 caps for Turkey during his career, and had one brief spell in Turkish football for Antalyaspor at the end of his career.
