'Life has been good since,' Ex-Haas boss and Drive to Survive star Guenther Steiner expresses relief after leaving the American F1 team
Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Guenther Steiner played a pivotal role in the Haas F1 ever since its inception almost a decade ago. However, the Italian-American was let go by the American team after disagreements with team owner Gene Haas . Now, Steiner has opened up about how he feels since he departed the role of Team Principal at Haas.

The 58-year-old claimed that he has enjoyed life since he left the team at the end of last year. Guenther Steiner highlighted that it was the first time in almost a decade when he has been able to not focus on his F1 duties. The Italian-American reckoned that he has used the past few weeks to introspect and admitted that he stayed at Haas for too long.

Life has been good since I left Haas ahead of this season. These last few weeks are the first time I’ve switched off from F1 for around a decade. This time has been good for me. The longer time goes on, the more I can see that I stayed at Haas too long. Guenther Steiner wrote on his column for F1

Steiner pointed out that once a person steps away from the hectic work environment, they could actually understand the reality. Guenther Steiner admitted that he got clarity since leaving Haas. Moreover, the Italian-American claimed that he was in denial while leading the American squad. The 58-year-old mentioned that he thought he could achieve his goals but realistically that was not possible. It was reported that Steiner might’ve been sacked for his interest in buying shares of the team.

When you step away, you get clarity – and you can see what you need to do. While you’re there, you’re in denial, you think you can do it but you cannot.

Guenther Steiner had enough of midfield battles in F1

Under Guenther Steiner, Haas made steady progress in its initial years. Gene Haas‘ squad finished fifth in the championship in 2018. However, the American team fell down the order and has since struggled to make it to the front of the F1 midfield.

Steiner claimed that with the current position of Haas, the team could fight for seventh or eighth place in the standings. However, the Italian-American affirmed that he was no longer interested in fighting for a couple of points every weekend.

Rather, Guenther Steiner wanted to fight for podiums. Moreover, the 58-year-old made it clear that he did not want to take a long-term project of building a team to the front of the pack. Steiner declared his desire to return to Formula 1 in the future. However, the ex-Haas boss affirmed that he would only join the right project which was being done right.

Guenther Steiner will continue to be a regular face in the paddock this year as part of a TV punditry role. However, the 58-year-old seems to be relaxed during his break from the hectic life of an F1 team boss. Certainly, the Italian-American might continue to stay outside of the grid for the next few months. Although, fans would want to see Steiner return to his prominent role at a different team in the near future.
