Cubs Injury Update: Drew Smyly to IL with Right Hip Issue

The Chicago Cubs made a flurry of roster moves on Tuesday. Notably, left-hander Drew Smyly landed on the 15-day injured list due to a right hip impingement.

Luke Little was recalled in a corresponding move, giving the Cubs a young reliever who has been effective in eight appearances so far this season. Little was recently called up on Saturday to serve as the 27th man for the doubleheader against the Miami Marlins.

He went on to pitch in one of those games and tossed a scoreless inning.

Smyly is one of many Cubs to hit the IL in April. The 34-year-old hasn't exactly been effective this season. After failing to capture a spot in the rotation out of Spring Training, Smyly has primarily seen low-stress relief situations.

Through nine outings, the veteran's 4.97 ERA isn't much of a difference-maker for a relief corps that has been up and down so far. While Smyly is out, Little has the chance to make his spot in the bullpen permanent if he can provide the team with more quality appearances.

As they open a series against the Houston Astros on Tuesday, the Cubs will have fresh reinforcements from the bullpen if need be. Little and Hayden Wesneski are the newest call-ups on the pitching side.
